OA Resources for Grade 4 Teachers

Practically ALL of the teaching and learning materials you will need for the grade 4 Operations and Algebraic Thinking standards are right here. Special thanks to the Grade 4 teachers in the Valdosta State University/Coastal Plains RESA Summer MSP workshop who helped to vet these materials!

Hot Off The Press...the HS Modeling Progression by Dr. William McCallum

Dr. William McCallum is the lead writer of the common core math standards.  He just released the HS Modeling Progression document.  This is in draft form, so feel free to leave comments at http://wp.me/p2CRrm-xA.

The "Who's Who" List of Math Resources

Last week I polled a small group of teachers on their awareness of specific common core internet resources.  Based on the results below, I dedicate this post to share some reliable, free internet resources that support the teaching & learning of mathematics.
Progressions Documents for the Common Core Math Standards
Tennessee's Teachers Mathematics Tooklit
Illustrative Mathematics
Visual Math Vocabulary Cards and other vocabulary resources
Mathematics Assessment Project
Opus Math Common Core Question Bank
Mathematics Common Core Toolbox
Bill McCallum's Blog (lead writer of the common core math standards)
The Mathematics Teaching Community
The Journal of Urban Mathematics Education
NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics)
GCTM (Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics)
NCSM (National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics)

Share you feedback...
  • Which of these sites do you use? will you use?
  • Which website(s) would you like added to the "Who's Who" list?

A Close Look at PARCC Prototype Mathematics Assessments - April 17, 2013

Susan Hull, Cathy Seeley and others from the DANA Center presented some very pertinent information today.  Did you know that any one math question on the PARCC assessment under a cluster heading may assess several standards under that cluster heading?  Work through one or more of the PARCC item and task prototype math assessment items, then ask yourself the following questions.

Three standards for mathematical practice were called forward as extremely important - MP3 (Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others), MP4 (Model with mathematics), and MP6 (Attend to precision). These SMPs will be explicitly assessed through the content standards.

We have to do things differently with mathematics instruction.  Simply put, but not simply done...
  • Math needs to be taught through relevant, real-life scenarios.
  • Students needs to work through assessments where there's more than one right answer.
  • Students need to work through computer-based assessments with a drag-and-drop feature.
  • Students need to respond to math questions with short-answer explanations.
  • Beyond engaging in discourse, students need to write their mathematical reasoning.
  • Students need to read, read, read!
  • Students may even need to learn to type.

Conceptua Math Briefing

Jacqueline Burns, Arjan Khalsa, and Janita Ford
"It's our job to wash the feet of educators, to serve the needs of everyone who is an educator, " professes Arjan Khalsa.  He is truly serving the needs of elementary educators through his creation of Conceptua Fractions, an online Common Core fractions curriculum that transforms the teaching and learning of mathematics. The program now includes integrated teacher supports, guided lessons for teaching division with fractions, mathematical investigations, and much more.

Tonight I saw compelling research based on the use of conceptuamath.com in 15 states, 99 schools, 557 classrooms, 18,250 licenses and 250,000 completed lessons.  There were significant, measurable gains in
  • student achievement in the NF standards,
  • teachers' and students' conceptual understanding of fractions,
  • use of productive talk moves by teachers, and
  • students' use of productive talk moves in mathematics as well as in other content areas.
So now, Janita and I began to brainstorm:

*What if this year's CRCT scores reflect a need for additional support with the NF standards?
*What if at least three elementary schools in each of our learning communities commit to the purchase and use of Conceptua Fractions with fidelity during the 2013-2014 school year?
*What if we would provide ongoing professional learning opportunities, support, monitoring, and feedback to those schools throughout the year?
*What if...

This decision is bigger than the both of us, so we'll take it to the "drawing board".  Like Arjan, we want to serve the needs of our teachers. Conceptua math could help us fulfill this mission.

NCSM Conference Highlights - April 16, 2013

The National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics Conference
is filled with the
Who's Who of Mathematics Teaching and Learning!

Julie McNamara's session, "Talking About Fractions: Helping All Students Engage in Mathematical Discourse" focused on reasoning and discourse. Her book Beyond Pizzas and Pies: 10 Essential Strategies for Supporting Fraction Sense is one of my favorite reads for professional learning in the teaching and learning of fractions. This work inspired a PL session I developed on understanding fractions.

Griffin RESA's shining star - Mary Elizabeth Mendenhall - facilitated the session, "Fraction Conversations: Effective Questioning and Technology Tools to Improve Instruction." She modeled productive talk moves while using the free fraction tools at www.conceptuamath.com.  Arjan Khalsa, the brainchild behind Conceptua Math, was also there! Feel free to contact him  at akhalsa@conceptuamath.com for more information.

The luncheon's featured speaker was a teacher from Jackson Public Schools (MS) - the home of my alma mater Jackson State University. Jennifer Wilson most recently was named by President Obama as a recipient of the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

By far, the best part of the day was interacting with a variety of Math Stars -
  • Lee V. Stiff (Professor of Mathematics Education and Associate Member of the Department of Mathematics at North Carolina State University, and past president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics)
  • Francis "Skip" Fennell (internationally renowned expert in mathematics education and McDaniel College Professor)
  • Bill McCallum (lead writer of the common core mathematics standards, and University Distinguished Professor of Mathematics and Head of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Arizona)
  • Ellen Whitesides (director of Common Core Projects at the University of Arizona)
  • Mari Muri (senior mathematics consultant for the Project to Increase Mastery of Mathematics and Science at Wesleyan University)
  • Debra Coggins ( mathematics education consultant and author of the book she's holding)
  • Miriam A. Leiva (founding president of TODOS:  Mathematics for ALL)
There's so much more to share...I'll be back with more updates...
